The Sales and Advertising records series is organized into seven subseries. The Business Condition reports subseries, 1946-1951 (1.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 589, contains incoming business condition reports from regional sales managers, comments and opinions on advertising, and complaints about Ford Motor Company vehicles. The Business Management Department records subseries, 1944-1952 (3.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 694, contains dealer loss reports, operating reports, and progress reports from district and regional sales offices; memorandums to district and regional sales offices; and lists of leading dealers in each district. The Car Sales Department records subseries, 1950-1953, (1.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 568, contains brochures, correspondence, and general sales bulletins regarding the 1953 Mobilgas Economy Run and the 1953 Ford Sunliner Convertible pace car for the Indianapolis 500 race; car and truck accessory production statistics; correspondence regarding monthly vehicle allotment procedures; inter-office memorandums regarding car and truck production; inter-office memorandums and telegrams regarding the 1954 Motor Mates ladies coats promotion; monthly reports listing the quantity of Ford passenger cars and trucks sent to each sales branch; and telegrams between the Car Sales Department and regional managers. The Marketing Research Department records subseries, 1950-1956 (3.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 695, contains market research survey reports conducted by Elmer Roper and Associates, Ford Motor Company's Marketing Research Department, and J. Walter Thompson Company, an advertising agency which handled Ford Motor Company advertising. The Service Department training materials subseries is organized into two subsubseries. The Audio recordings subsubseries, 1954-1956 (1 oversize box), Acc. 919, contains fourteen 33 1/3 RPM phonograph records for training Ford dealers how to service Ford automobiles and trucks. The Filmstrip kits subsubseries, 1950-1955 (6 oversize boxes), Acc. 930, contains training kits which contain 33 1/3 RPM phonograph records, filmstrips, and educational booklets teaching automotive mechanics how to service systems in Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury automobiles. The L. W. Smead records subseries, 1946-1953 (1 cubic ft.), Acc. 577, contains meeting notices, agendas, minutes, and supporting meeting documents for various Ford Division and Ford Motor Company committees that L. W. Smead participated in. The Walker A. Williams records subseries, 1941-1954 (3 cubic ft.), Acc. 831, contains proceedings of the Branch Management meeting, 1945; Dearborn Sales Conference, 1949; Ford Dealers Advertising Committee Chairmen meetings, 1951-1952; Ford Dealer Advertising Council meeting, 1946; Lincoln-Mercury Dealer Advertising Committee meeting, 1949; Lincoln-Mercury meeting, 1951; National Ford Dealers' Council, 1946-1954; Regional Managers meetings, 1941-1946; and Sales Management meetings, 1950-1953.

When Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903, Alexander Y. Malcolmson was elected the Company's first treasurer, but his assistant James Couzens actually managed financial functions.
